Nha Trang is one of the most important tourist hubs of Vietnam, thanks to its beautiful beaches with fine and clean sand and clear ocean water with mild temperature all year round. There are several resorts, amusement parks in this city and on islands off the coast. The most beautiful streets of the city is Tran Phu Street along the seaside.

The cit is a venue for annual sailing boat racing from Hong Kong. In recent years, the city has welcomed many 5-star sea cruises. The city’s cuisine is famous for its fresh seafoods. The area’s Bird’s nest soup is deemed one of the best in Vietnam. Bird’s nests are collected naturally and in bird’s farms in the islands off the city coast and in some houses in the inner city. As a seaside city, its cuisine is characterized by several seafood dishes.

In addition to the sailing boat racing, Nha Trang has a wealth of tourist activities for visitors. Island hopping, scuba diving, water sports and many other great beach resort community activities can be had here in Nha Trang.

Mun Island

Situated in the southern part of Nha Trang Bay in Khanh Hoa Province, Mun Island has many coral, which is great for diving. Below the depth of 5 metres the coral is a spectacular sight. This island is managed by Marine Protected Area (MPA) Nha Trang.

Mun Island Nha Trang

We went out on a speed boat that my local friend was able to obtain from the same company that takes Vinpearl resort guest to Mun Island. You can also go with the diveboat that takes people here for scuba diving. Today my girlfriend and I decided to doa little snorkeling at Mun Island. If I didn’t know better, I would think that Liendaughter was born in the ocean. Nhi swim like a fish and she is only 7 years old. Ican see the gills growning on her. There is no worry looking after the few youngpeople that went with us as the water was very calm, and the snorkeling veryenjoyable. Nhi and her cousin quickly learned to dive under water to look at the fishwith the snorkel masks. I see other group visiting Mun Island to go diving but wedecide to do the snorkeling thing instead. I think it was more enjoyable watchingthem than looking at the fish and coral myself. The boat crew was great. Not only didthey crew the boat but also (you can also charter a boat with the dive company likeCoco Dive or Rainbow diving) also cooked and prepare the meals. I will definitely notbe loosing weight anytime soon on this trip to Nha Trang.

We came back to the my friend’s house for dinner and a quick nap before first. The street they lived on was quiet and there was not much traffic going back and forth.once everyont was fully rested back to the beach we headed for more swimming and a cold beer. There was even people selling BBQ lobster on the beach. The venders carry pots and hot coals from her shoulder as she balance the whole cooking assembly on her back. Another familiy member followed behind with the cooler filled with sweet snails, lobster, crab, prawns and other great looking shellfish I have never seen before. We ate again and the food was gone in no time. The lobster lady assured us that the lobster was fresh and we were getting a great deal. Around Mun Island you can see lobster walking on the seafloor. It is against the law to bring any home but my friend told me of storys about one of their other friend that would sneak a few under his diving jacket home for a feast.

Location: Mun Island is situated on the south of Nha Trang Bay, Nha Trang City, Khanh Hoa Province.

Description : Named Mun Island because in the south east of the island, it has high-rise cliffs with dangerous wattles forming caves and grottoes, especially its stones are as black as ebony, which could rarely be found in other areas.

Detail : In the black-stone caves of Hon Mun, every year flocks of swallow migrate to the area and build their nests. Due to the island’s location adjacent to the hot sea-currents from the equator, suitable to the development conditions of corals and various types of tropical sea creatures, the sea bed of Hon Mun is home to an abundant and diverse group of marine species, an interesting and useful place for researchers, oceanographers and tourists to observe and explore more of the sea creatures’ life.
In Hon Mun, visitors can dive or take grass-bottom boat to admire the colour coral and sea creatures. All the diving centers come and stop near this island: visibility is always excellent there and there is an impressive variety of corals of all colors, with numerous pretty tropical fishs. This is the island where all dive sites already mentioned in the Nha Trang section are located. It also has a couple of other sites such as Rainbow Reef and Tiger Wall.
Mun was included on a list of 16 proposed marine protected areas compiled on behalf of the former MOSTE (Nguyen Chu Hoi et al. 1998). Finally, a proposal to establish a marine protected area at Hon Mun was included in the Asian Development Bank’s (ADB 1999) marine and coastal protected areas systems plan for Vietnam. In this proposal, the area of the site is given as 10,500 ha, comprising a marine component of 7,500 ha and a terrestrial component of 3,000 ha (ADB 1999).

Hon Mun proposed marine protected area is also home to a number of globally species, including Hawksbill Turtle Eretmochelys imbricata (ADB 1999). A number of the small, rocky islands off the coast of Khanh Hoa province provide suitable nesting habitat for Germain’s Swiflet Collocalia germani and Black-nest Swiftlet C. maxima (Casellini et al. 1999); several of these islands are located within Hon Mun proposed marine protected area (ADB 1999).

Salangane island

Location Salangane island (Yen island) 17km from Nha Trang
Location: Salangane island (Yen island) 17km from Nha Trang

Description: Far offshore, visible from Nha Trang Beach the Yen island appears with lush green colors where salangane nests have been harvested for years to make the traditional “bird’s nest” tonic and food.

Tourists can visit caves where the swallows create their nets on the rocks and enjoy a delicious and nutritious food prepared from swallows’ nets and sugar candy which in the past was reserved only for kings.

Detail :Salangane Island is most famous for Yen Sao which is the name of the nest of Salangane or swifts. The locals harvest the bird nests (considered a delicacy) used in soups. These nests are processed and exported to Taiwan and Hong Kong. The birds build their nest high on the walls of the cave on the islands. To access the nests, harvesters must climb on ladders fashioned from bamboo.

Because the caves must remain dark lest the birds are scared off, many climbers fall to their death every year trying to harvest the nests. The bird nest comes in two types, white and red nests. The nest are fashioned by the Salangane that make their homes in caves.

The nest are made out of the bird’s saliva. Usually, a typical bird creates one nest a year during springtime using both parents saliva. As there is such a demand for their nest (thought to have medicinal qualities), the locals began to remove the nest several times a year causing the birds to have to continue producing the nests. The red variety of nests are a result of the birds having to create so much saliva for the new nests that they cough up blood along with their saliva causing the nest to take on the red color of their blood. This variety of nest costs their weight in gold or more in the retail market of Hong Kong or Taiwan.

Yen Islands is not only known as the Salanganes nest, but also the only one has the beautiful twin-beach.Come here, you can visit the Salangane Cave where many workersuse bamboo stairs to get the nest on the high cliff. It is really the unforgettable sight. By glass bottom boat, you can see fantastic coral-reefs which are covered with multi coloured fishes, and enjoy swimming, snorkelling in clear, smooth water on the twin-beach.

Long Son Pagoda

The most revered pagoda in Nha Trang, Long Son was originally built on the summit of Trai Thuy hill to the south of the city, but was detroyed by a typhoon at the beginning of the 20th century.
Not to do any evil. To perform what is good. To keep one’s own heart pure. These are the teachings of lord Buddha.

Indeed, these and other teachings are found scripted on the walls of Nha Trang’s largest pagoda in both Vietnamese and English. At any one time here, there are at least seventy students who are future monks, and eighteen orphans who serve as guides and above all, postcard vendors. Two girls approached us as we were making our way up the stairs to reassure us so as not to worry, that they were not hawkers but rather students, and they wouldn’t be harassing us… except for the postcards. This is the way to make a contribution to this community, as they will not accept cash in any shape or form.

There is so much to see here that it was great that a young man decided to serve as our guide; the real marvel is hidden from view upon arrival. A word of caution to anyone that cannot climb more than one flight of stairs: do not attempt to go to the top. There is a sign that discourages people with medical conditions from ascending, and it should be heeded. Luck came for us in the way of a bottle of water, which is absolutely necessary, and several rest stops on the way. A huge, silver replica of a reclining Buddha waits at the top of the stairs (24 meters tall), which for us was a consolation prize for having missed the golden one in Bangkok.

The view from the top is spectacular: you can see the entire city, the water, the housing, the shacks and the beautiful flowers. Also visible are various buildings which are part of this establishment with their peaceful, tiled roofs, their sculpted ferocious looking dragons, and the prominent inverted yellow swastika which our guide hastens to tell us was a peaceful symbol and has nothing to do with Nazism.

By oneself, evil deed is done. By oneself, one is defiled. By oneself, evil deed is not done. By oneself, one becomes purified. Purity and Impurity are done by oneself. No one can purify another.

The words continue to dance in front of my eyes, and they never quite leave me, as we continue our visit through the main hall: this area has been modernized and rebuilt several times, and serves as a memorial to the Buddhists who gave their lives to support the US-backed Diem regime of the 1960’s. We meet a very old man who seems in contemplation and is glad to engage in some words in English with us. His face breaks into a smile when we tell him we are American. He allows us to enter a very special room where chairs and tables are set in such a way for meetings. Around the room are framed photos of the various heads of the “congregation”, and the years of their reigns. Free entrance to the public.

Pa Nagar Towers

The Po Nagar Towers once stood at the entrance of Cai river, where the river meets the ocean. The towers stood in isolation on a rock foundation, but over many years the towers and the land it stands on became part of the land mass as the river changed its flows.

Today, the tower is north of the river and the rock formation it stood on became known as Mount Cu Lao. The town of Vinh Phuoc at the base of the mountain was once a fishing village, known as Xom Chai and Xom Bong.

Po Nagar Towers complex was built between the 7th and 12th century. The most beautiful towers were built in the year 813 and 817. Most were destroyed and only four towers are still standing. Each tower is a shrine to a different deity.

One tower is the shrine to Xiva, one of three most powerful deities in Hinduism. One tower is dedicated to Ganexa, the son of Xiva. This deity has a human body and an elephant head. Po Nagar is the tallest tower, also known as Thap Ba (Tower of the Lady). Po Nagar or Uma is the wife of Xiva the supreme. Po Nagar towers stands 23m in height and was built around 817

Bricks were used in the building of Po Nagar. The four-sided structure is topped by a pyramid with a statue of the four armed Xiva riding Nandin the enchanted ox at the apex. The exterior of the tower is covered by intricate rock carvings of dancers, people rowing boats, grinding rice or hunting with bows and arrows.

The interior is airy and cool. An alter made of granite is placed at the base of the statue of Po Nagar. Po Nagar is a goddess with ten arms. She is also the goddess credited for her help with teaching people how to farm. Her statue was originally made out of hard incense wood. The statue was removed by the French in 1946. A new statue with more Vietnamese features is its replacement. The Po Nagar towers complex is an example of Cham’s architecture and art at its height
